Many patients wonder if it is possible to alleviate melasma with natural ingredients such as lemon juice. This stems from his concern for the blemishes that have appeared on his face and cause an uneven tint.

Melasma is the darkening of the skin around the face. It usually affects pregnant women, although its manifestation is not limited to this specific group.

It is believed that melasma arises due to a combination of several factors, including, above all, exposure to the sun.

Next, we’ll delve deeper into this cutaneous pathology, its treatment, and the home remedies that have been proposed to resolve it.

What is melasma and what are its causes?

Melasma is a hyperpigmentation of the skin on the face. It appears as brown or dark spots on the forehead, cheeks, chin or even neck.

Its incidence is higher in women than in men.  The reason for this is that the increase in female hormones, in turn, causes the increase in melanin and, therefore, the appearance of melasma.

The origin of melasma is still unclear. However, it usually appears after constant exposure to the sun without the use of sunscreen.

Genetic factors are also among the causes, as is the irregular presence of female hormones. Because of this, the appearance of melasma in pregnant women is common.

The use of oral contraceptives and hormonal treatments with progesterone and estrogen also contribute to the development of melasma. So they are also on the list of possible causes.

Are yoghurt, banana and lemon suitable?

Treatment for melasma includes specific creams to lighten the skin and, in some cases, chemical exfoliations. Therefore, there are those who consider that they can prepare bleaching mixtures at home, with natural elements such as lemon juice, for example.

However, dermatologists do not recommend the use of home remedies, as they can further stain the skin and aggravate the problem, in addition to causing irritation and injury.

For now, it’s best to follow the doctor’s instructions and apply sunscreen daily to keep your skin well protected.

Dr. Shinjita Das explains that “if the skin is protected from the sun, melasma usually disappears after pregnancy or after stopping treatment with oral contraceptives. In men, melasma rarely disappears”.

It is important to keep in mind that the effectiveness of this home remedy for reducing melasma is based on anecdotal data and not scientific evidence. Therefore, before applying it, it is recommended that you consult a dermatologist.

  • 2 tablespoons of natural yoghurt (30 ml).
  • 3 tablespoons of lemon juice (45 ml).

Preparation

  • Peel the banana, add it to a bowl and mash until pureed.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt and mix until smooth and creamy.
  • Finally add lemon juice and mix again.

mode of use

  • At night, after thoroughly washing and drying your face and neck, apply the preparation evenly to the affected area.
  • Leave on for a few minutes and then wash your face thoroughly.

Take care of your skin so that the blemishes are not more pronounced

While it’s not recommended to apply lemon juice to lighten your skin, if you decide to do so, at least try not to expose yourself to the sun, as this can further accentuate the blemishes.

If your skin has lemon residue and you expose it to the sun, it will generate a chemical reaction that could burn the treated area.

Therefore, it is very important to  wash your face with plenty of water and not exceed the recommended time with the preparation in the area.

Also, after using it, you should apply a moisturizer or sunscreen if you leave the house. Your skin will be more sensitive, and although you’ve washed it well and there are no traces of lemon, you should still protect it.

When to look for a doctor?

If you notice more and more noticeable dark spots on the face and suspect that it is melasma, you should see a dermatologist as soon as possible so that the appropriate treatment can be prescribed.

For this diagnosis, the doctor will use an implement known as a Wood’s lamp. By illuminating your skin with this special light, he can easily determine the presence of melasma.

If you are pregnant, do not leave the house without first applying sunscreen.
